LATERAL POLICE OFFICER RECRUITMENT

 

The Community:  Incorporated in 1990, the City of Federal Way is the third largest City in King County after Seattle and Bellevue, and the seventh largest City in Washington State.  Located approximately twenty-five miles south of Seattle and eight miles north of Tacoma, with a population of 83,259, the approximately 21.2 square mile City is situated on a high plateau overlooking Puget Sound and has panoramic views of the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges.  Mt. Rainier provides a scenic backdrop to this suburban community.

 

The Department:  Initially contracted with King County for police services, in early 1995, the City Council determined that the City was ready to bring the delivery of public safety services in-house.  The model of policing being sought was formed around a Vision and Values statement prepared by the City Council, which focuses on service, accessibility, and responsiveness:

 

A community based Public Safety Department that represents the special qualities and features of the City of Federal Way.  The Public Safety Department will inspire a sense of confidence and security in our citizens through professionalism, citizen involvement, and creative approaches to public safety.  The Public Safety Department will be distinguished as a caring, competent, firm, fair, accessible and innovative organization that actively seeks opportunities to help citizens.  The Public Safety Department will be a part of, rather than apart from, the community, fostering an efficient, citizen-public safety partnership to insure a safe and secure city.

 

The Federal Way Department of Public Safety offers a wide variety of work/collateral assignments.  There are opportunities in Patrol, Traffic, Criminal Investigations, Special Investigations Unit (narcotics/vice), Special Response Team (SWAT), Major Accident Investigation Team, School Resource Officer, Neighborhood Resource Officer, Bomb Disposal Unit, K-9 (generalist/narcotic), Field Training, EVOC Instruction, Firearms Training, Defensive Tactics, Civil Disturbance, Special Emphasis Units, and Traffic School Instruction.  It is truly a multifaceted department.

 

Salary and Benefits:  The salary range is $3,675-$4,930/month, experienced Officers will be hired at a wage commensurate to their experience level.  There is an additional 9% awarded for things such as college education and living within City limits if you participate in the Career Development Program as set forth in the Guild contract or you can elect to participate in the City’s Pay for Performance Plan once you have reached the top step of the range which is equivalent to $5,242/month paid in a one time lump sum annually. 

 

Along with the competitive wage, the City of Federal Way offers an attractive benefits package, which includes but is not limited to:  two retirement plans Federal Way Retirement Systems (FWRS), which is in lieu of Social Security and Law Enforcement Officer’s & Fire Fighter’s (LEOFF), through the State of Washington, an optional deferred compensation plan, two medical plans which the City pays 100% of the premium for employees and 90% for dependents, dental and vision coverage paid at 100% by the City for employee and full family.  The City observes 11 holidays each year, one is a floating holiday that can be used at anytime, during the year it was earned and employees accrue vacation and sick leave at the rate of four hours per pay period (8 hours per month).  After five years the accrual rate for vacation increases to five hours per pay period (10 hours per month).

 

Moving expenses, up to $5,000 dollars, will be paid by the City, if a candidate is hired.  Some conditions may apply.
